My Idol - Preston Bailey

I was recently lucky enough to spend an evening with Preston Bailey, world renowned for his fabulous event designs. As an event planner myself I have for many years admired his ability to change an average space into lush extravagant beauty. Never in my wildest dreams had I thought I would be lucky enough to share a room with my idol so when I heard he was holding a seminar in Sydney I was on the first flight there.

Preston Bailey is a unique man with a colourful and vivid imagination. His instinctive talent for dramatic transformation and design has led him to a successful 30 year career with cliental of celebrities, royalty and athletes worldwide such as Joan Rivers, Donald Trump, Oprah Winfrey and Bill Crosby just to name a few. His one of a kind event detailing allows him to transform the most ordinary space into that of an unworldly theatrical and lavish environment.

I took away from Preston many empowering lessons, he helped me to change my way of thinking when planning and designing an event. One of his main principles is to take the beauty of what we see within the outside environment and bring it inside in a new and magical way. He has no limitations to what can be pulled from your imagination and brought to reality. He thinks on a larger than life scale where his goal is to leave his clients in awe, transfixed on what only some will only ever be able to experience within their most beautiful and wildest dreams.

When planning an event he stresses some key elements to ensure its success:

Have at least one dramatic element which has your guests stop and stare in awe of what is before them. A signature piece that is etched in the memory of all who is lucky enough to be in its presence. A defining moment which your guests will recall upon for years to come. If you have a look through Prestons portfolio you will notice he will recreate something beautiful with the use of floral art or creating an extravagant piece or a romantic mood with colourful tones of lighting.

Your table settings are imperial to a successful event. With a table being an intimate place for your guests to gather and spend the majority of their evening it is the perfect canvas to charm them by bringing together some beautiful elements including opulent flowers, crystal, tealights and beautiful linens. Every element must be considered from your chairs, to your cutlery, food to your centerpieces, place settings to your china, don’t be afraid to experiment as the possibilities are endless.

Consider every little detail. In his book ‘celebrations’ he explains “the exquisite layering of details is what keeps guests intrigued and on a constant path of discovery throughout the event”. I know many of you will agree that when attending events it begins feel like deja vu as they include all the basic elements you encountered at the last. There seems to be a standardised checklist which brides and event organisers alike will use to ensure they have ticked all the necessary boxes in the planning process. Many forget to consider adding details that will ensure their event is unique, it is so important to consider exciting elements and unpredictable ways to excite and entertain your guests so as to ensure it is not a replica of all those that have been held before it. If you want your event to be truly memorable you must dig deep within your imagination and see no limitation to creating truly remarkable details which can be created DIY, with a little planning and thinking outside of the box the possibilities are endless.

Preston has inspired me to think outside of normality and seek ways in which our most colourful and exciting dreams can be transformed into a space where others can gasp in awe of its opulence and beauty. For now I bring you some of Prestons events which took my breath away. As you look through your computer screen at these lush and inspiring spaces it is normal to experience loss for words or head to toe goose bumps, you can only imagine the feelings you would experience if you are ever lucky enough to attend one of Prestons events in person.

How to Organise a Closet!

I don't have the biggest closet in the world, so I like to create extra space in my closet through interesting ideas to store my beloved items! I have quite a realistic closet, I don't find it always necessary to colour code my shoes and clothes in such a fast paced world. However It always makes me happy when everything is neatly packed away and kind of reminds me of a clothing store!

For the top part of my closet I like to keep my lighter coloured clothes on white hangers and my darker clothes on black hangers. This makes it easier for me to find pieces of clothing when i'm having a rushed morning. More importantly it looks visually appealing to the eye and keeps your light and darks organised!

I keep the shorter items of clothing towards the centre of my closet so they won't clash to much with my shoes, and allows me to see my shoe collection clearer.

I have a lot of shoes for such a small shelf, so on the top I place my heels in a diagonal position to create space for all of them to fit in. On the bottom two shelves I place my smaller heels front to back to save even more space!

I don't colour code my skirts, but I do like to hang them in according to their length. This gives me more room in the centre of my closet so it's creates a more open and less cluttered space.

In this part of my closet I keep my jackets, formal heels, accessories and makeup storage. The shelves are a great way to store smaller items that can't be hung up.

I like to store my necklaces on removable wall hangers to keep them from getting damaged and to save a bit more space. Im obsessed with this feature in my closest as it reminds me a bit of a jewellery store!

Folding your jeans and shorts as opposed to hanging them is a great way to save space for a smaller closet. You'll find a lot of smaller boutiques do this to save space in they're shop.

I also like to hang my belts to save space and to prevent them from being crushed and distorted.

I have reserved a shelf on the top to keep my clutches and smaller bags. I keep them on the top shelf because I don't need to use these bags everyday, but I still want to keep them on display in my closet, because they're just to cute to hide away!

I stack my bracelets on a paper roll to keep them organised and looking cute! At the back i have folded my scarves and keep my hair accessories and sunglasses on this shelf.

Bedroom Decoration Tips and Ideas!

On my set of drawers I love having pretty scented candles lit as it adds a luminous glow to a dark room and keeps it smelling fresh! As a centrepiece I used a portrait of one of my favourite icons, Marilyn Monroe, to set the mood for my room and to be used as a focal point for my space.

Fresh flowers from your garden or a store can brighten up any space as well as providing a fresh scent and natural feel. I love placing pink flowers in my room as it matches the decor and adds more colour to a neutrally based room!

I love my perfume collection and the bottles are just to cute not to show off! I've placed the perfume under a silver tray that I found at a thrift shop, not only does this add an extra feature to the bottles but it also keeps them looking clean and organised.

On my bedside table I like to keep a soft scented candle and soft flowers to keep this space of my room nice and calm. I have place a photo of my younger self in an even frame, the photo colours match my rooms colour palette so it won't be confusing against the eye.

I like to have a well lit lamp next to my bed so it's easy for me to read at night. I got this lamp from target and i'm obsessed with the cut out floral design on the lamp shade, especially since it matches my bed spread! I got my bedspread from PB teen and I decided to go for a neutral colour so I could have multiple colours in my pillows. Personally I love lots of pillow on my bed as It makes my room feel very luxurious and girly. It also adds an interesting feature to my space.

On the floor I like to keep a fluffy rug next to my bed as it adds more texture and dimension to a small space. I chose a dark neutral colour so it will be easy to maintain and won't be a distraction from the rest of the room.

I like to make my desk look fun, cute and overall more enjoyable to look at when i'm working or studying. It's a good idea to have a nice clean space when using your desk as it can help you stay focused for longer and not be as distracted from your set task.

On my top shelf I like to add statement pieces and accessories that reflect my style and that will add a pop of colour to the neutral desk. I've added vintage crystal perfume jars across the top shelf to give a glamourous 'shabby chic' feel.

On this side of the top shelf I have gone with a shell theme. I have decorated a glass jar, box and bra with shells that I collected a few summers ago. I think it creates a bit of a quirky look as well as a calming feature to my room. I mixed this theme up with candles and crystal perfume bottles.

Placing flowers in bowls of water can create an interesting and unique centrepiece, it also helps visually balance out the desk.

I have balanced out my book shelf with matching the height on both sides and having a tall centre piece in the middle. I like placing my books in different directions to add some interest to this space. I like to store my electronics and personal items in cute patterned boxes to add another feature to my room.

On my little table I like to place my favourite items and accessories so they can be shown and used more frequently. I have placed the table on the diagonal to make my room not look so boxy. I have also added objects of different heights to create interest for this space.

“After all these years, I am still involved in the process of self-discovery. It's better to explore life and make mistakes than to play it safe. Mistakes are part of the dues one pays for a full life.”

“Beauty is how you feel inside, and it reflects in your eyes. It is not something physical.”
